BUDGET airline Cebu Pacific Air Inc. is maintaining its strategy of selling seats to domestic destinations below cost, offering another round of discounts on off-peak travel starting late last week.

In a statement, Cebu Pacific said that clients could fly to several domestic destinations from June 14 to July 31 for as low as P398 one way, exclusive of fees, taxes and surcharges.

The promo follows the airline's P10 and P1 fare promo that caused a marketing stir and was eventually mimicked by Philippine Airlines' sister company Air Philippines.

The selling period for this promo began last May 5 and will run until tomorrow, May 9.

This promotional sale is on top of Cebu Pacific's "Go" fares, which offer permanent low fares for early bookings all year round.

"We are nearing the end of summer when domestic tourism is robust, but we would like to encourage people to continue traveling even during the off-peak period because this is when we and the whole tourism industry need people to travel more," Cebu Pacific general manager Bong Mojica said in a statement. "Events like our summer seat sale will stimulate and grow the market even further."

The summer seat sale fares start at P398 for Cebu to Iloilo; P498 for Manila to Kalibo and Roxas; P598 for Manila to Bacolod, Cebu, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa and Tacloban, Cebu to Davao, Zamboanga, and Davao to Zamboanga; and P798 for Manila to Butuan, Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete, Davao, Tagbilaran, Zamboanga and from Davao to Iloilo (via Cebu) for a one-way trip.

"Just like our previous seat sales, these fares are for immediate payment upon booking," Mojica said. "The fastest way to buy tickets for this promo is via our website."

The company did not disclose how many seats would be made available for this promo.

PAL to raise cost of tickets
Saturday, May 06, 2006
Manila Times

THE Civil Aeronotics Board (CAB) has approved the petition of flag carrier Philippine Airlines to impose a higher fuel surcharge owing to the continued increase in oil prices. Frederick Villarin, CAB hearing division chief, said the regulator approved PAL’s request to increase its fuel surcharge on local and international flights. From $49 previously, a one-way ticket to the United States and Canada would incur an additional cost of $69.

Flights to Thailand, Vietnam and China would be charged an additional $24, higher than the existing fuel surcharge of $15.

The surcharge for flights to Taiwan and Korea was raised from $15 to $17. Similarly, one-way tickets to Japan and Indonesia would incur an additional $17 and $30, respectively, up from the previous $15 for either destinations.

The CAB also approved an additional increase of P100 for Luzon flights, P200 for Visayas destinations and P300 for flights to Mindanao.

Dubai crude, the Philippines’ benchmark for the commodity, peaked at $64.7 a barrel to average at $62.36 in April, higher than the $57.82 in March. Jet fuel prices are pegged at between $70 and $80 a barrel.

A fuel surcharge is a temporary relief granted to airlines to help them offset losses they incur from higher jet fuel prices. Fuel accounts for a third of an airline’s operating cost per passenger.

It is the highest expense next to labor. Jet fuel started going up in 2002 but local airlines began asking for an increase in fuel surcharges in 2004.

Recently, a number of foreign airlines have secured regulatory approval for an increase in their fuel surcharge.

This latest round of increases in fuel surcharge came on the heels of record oil prices in the international market.

Crude rose to the $75 a barrel level last month on investor concerns over the US' nuclear standoff with Iran and continued rebel skirmishes in Nigeria.

Both countries are key exporters of crude, and their troubles come at a time when demand for the commodity is rising in China and India. --Darwin G. Amojelar
