Thursday Thirteen #11

Dear Me,

It's Thursday once again.

Filipinos of olden times (and even up to this day) had numerous beliefs and superstitions about the various aspects of life. One would say that these superstitions had become part of our culture, a way of life. These beliefs derive good luck, blessings, hope as well as warnings to avoid the bad things in this life.

Be acquainted with some of them here.

Thirteen FILIPINO Superstitions & Beliefs

1. While cooking, it is best not to sing for one will remain a spinster all her life.

2. If you are dining and accidentally drop a spoon or a fork on the ground, expect to have a female (spoon) or a male (fork) guest coming by.

3. When the clock strikes 12 midnight to mark the New Year, it is advised that kids should jump so they will get taller.

4. If there is an upcoming event like graduation, wedding, etc., one must not travel far since he/she is prone to accidents.

5. If along the way you meet a black cat, something bad is going to happen.

6. A photo taken with three (3) people in it will cause the middle person to die.

7. Sweeping the floor at night drives the good luck away.

8. Don't sleep when your hair is still wet (from the bath/shower) because this will make you insane.

9. When a mirror or a photo glass frame breaks, someone is bound to die.

10. Brides-to-be are forbidden to wear (to try on) their wedding gowns before their special day. The wedding may not push through if they do.

11. If a black butterfly hovers around, someone in the family has passed away.

12. When you are in the province or in the woods, it is best to utter "tabi-tabi po" to forewarn unseen spirits or elements of a person crossing its territory.

13. A long life awaits a person with big ears.

  7. Your article amused me while it gave insight into your culture. Thanks, and hey, we truck drivers have a list of trucker tales....some people call superstitions, 'wife tales' but when a trucker says.....'you won't believe this......." you know a lie is forthcoming. Great post, great blog.
