Clean Out The Clutter

by , in
Dear Me,

This idea has been going on for quite a while and I think I even attempted to start it.

I wanted to clear out all the unnecessary things in our home but I just couldn't seem to get on with it. I kept putting it on and off. Just spending a day of cleaning a particularly small area isn't enough.

I have this inexplicable urge to sweep away all the dust, dirt, soot in the nooks and crannies of the house. I'm not yet past wiping off windows nor moving furniture. I'm still in the stage of sorting stuff, cleaning disorder and throwing unwanted possessions.

These multitude of disorderliness can only be found in our bedroom. I haven't tackled yet other parts of the house.

I hope that breathing fresh air and a pleasing view will be a good motivation, enough for me to arm myself with cleaning cloths, broom, dustpan and trash bag. :)

Unconscious Mutterings: Five

by , in
Dear Me,

I'm been munching bars of chocolate since early this morning. Now, my tummy feels kinda heavy. I don't feel strange except it feels hard. I wonder if that's a sign of indigestion. Hehehe! Yes, I'm a choco-glutton!

@@@@@@@@@

To re-introduce this mind exercise:

Unconscious Mutterings.
Free association is described as a "psychonanalytic procedure in which a person is encouraged to give free rein to his or her thoughts and feelings, verbalizing whatever comes into the mind without monitoring its content." Over time, this technique is supposed to help bring forth repressed thoughts and feelings that the person can then work through to gain a better sense of self.

That's an admirable goal, but for the purposes of this exercise, we're just hoping to have a little fun with the technique. Each week I'll post ten words to which you can respond to with the first thing that comes to mind.

"Rules are, there are no rules." There are no right or wrong answers. Don't limit yourself to one word responses; just say everything that pops into your head. AND you don't have to have your words up on Sunday. Take all week if you want! Read the FAQ for more information.

  1. Carpet :: red

  2. William :: Tell (marksman with the crossbow)

  3. Oh! :: my goodness

  4. Board game :: mind game

  5. Sunlight :: sunshine

  6. Delay :: long wait

  7. Winner :: champion

  8. Concubine :: unfaithful

  9. Comatose :: unconscious

  10. Satisfy :: fulfilled

Have time? Participate and let your mind do the muttering. :)

Miguel @ 10 Months

by , in
Dear Me,

I haven't been successful in re-organizing and re-sorting my photo archive. I don't know why I can't seem to finish this thing-to-do. I've spent years planning and starting to sort my archives but I was never able to see through it till the end. Hmm.

Waddling through files and folders is too tedious especially if you want to separate countless photos of
Miguel as a baby. He'll be turning two (2) years old soon and I haven't still chosen which amongst those photos to include in my baby photo projects: from birth to 12-month old photo frame and baby scrapbooking (which I have to learn yet).

Anyway, I haven't seen any great shots of him yet but I found these photos a little cute. They were taken one morning in
August. He was 10 months old then.

Photojojo: Creepy Self-Portraits

by , in
Dear Me,

I haven't read
Coraline because I don't have a copy yet. Ahehehe!

Synopsis:
After Coraline and her parents move into an old house, Coraline asks her mother about a mysterious locked door. Her mother unlocks it to reveal that it leads nowhere: "When they turned the house into flats, they simply bricked it up," her mother explains. But something about the door attracts the girl, and when she later unlocks it herself, the bricks have disappeared. Through the door, she travels a dark corridor (which smells "like something very old and very slow") into a world that eerily mimics her own, but with sinister differences. "I'm your other mother," announces a woman who looks like Coraline's mother, except "her eyes were big black buttons." Coraline eventually makes it back to her real home only to find that her parents are missing -- they're trapped in the shadowy other world.

Here are my own scary button-eyed self-portraits:

Waking Up On The Wrong Side Of The Bed

by , in
Dear Me,

Despite having a grand time the day before, there were instances that we woke the following day all grouchy and crabby. I, myself, wonder sometimes.

Anyway, here's a few tips to refresh the day even before it becomes worse.

  1. As soon as the alarm rings...
Spend your first 15 seconds awake planning something nice to do for yourself today. "This can really set you up in a good mood - even if it's just going by the farmers' market and getting fresh strawberries," says Alice Domar, PhD, Be Happy Without Being Perfect: How to Break Free from the Perfection Deception book.

  2. Get up.
The longer you lie there, the more you ruminate, the darker your outlook is likely to become, says Christine Padesky, PhD, co-author of Mind Over Mood. So get vertical and make a cup of coffee, take a shower, feed the cat.

  3. Drink.
    - make that two glasses of water upon awakening, the time when our bodies are dehydrated, says Susan M. Kleiner, PhD, author of The Good Mood Diet. Dehydration causes fatigue, which affects your mood.

  4. Move it.
You already know the number one way of chasing away a bad mood: exercise. A workout at the gym sure helps. But even just a few minutes of movement - a fast walk, for example - raises energy and reduces tension, says mood expert Robert Thayer, PhD, professor of psychology at California State University, Long Beach, and author of Calm Energy.

  5. Investigate.
When you're dogged by anxiety or the dread you woke up with, try to pinpoint what's causing it. Did someone say anything the day before? Do you have a meeting today you wish you didn't? Was it the dream you were having when the alarm went off? "If you can figure out why you're upset, that's halfway to feeling better," says Domar.

  6. Be kind and thankful.
This isn't exactly news, but generosity and gratitude are both big contributors to happiness, according to Todd B. Kashdan, PhD, who directs the Laboratory for the Study of Social Anxiety, Character Strengths, and Related Phenomena at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Do something nice for a stranger or friend and see if you don't feel better about yourself. Also, jot down three things that you're grateful for. It seems so simple, but counting your blessings just has a way of making you remember the sun is shining.

  7. Laugh at yourself.
The best comedians point out the mundane aspects of life - relationship strife, a boring job, a closet full of too-tight clothes; they exaggerate those circumstances, and give us a perspective we can laugh about, says Mark Ridley, owner of the Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan. Look at your own life and try to appreciate the absurdity of what doesn't go exactly according to plan (the diets, the men, the buzz cut). Acknowledging how little control we actually have over what happens is sometimes a most freeing gift to yourself.

So even before ruining your day entirely and only to blame yourself, heed these words.

These wonderful pieces of advice was lifted off from
Seven Ways to Restart a Day by Kathryn Matthews.

New Year Trip Destination: Cebu (Part 2)

by , in
Dear Me,

Yes, it was my little boy's first plane ride.

It was also our first time to use the newly-opened
NAIA Terminal 3, also known as T3.

It was a holiday visit to his daddy's father and sisters in Cebu.

Our plane landed at the Mactan Cebu International Airport at past 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon. After claiming our luggage from the baggage counter, we hailed a cab that would bring us to the city, specifically at Elizabeth Mall. There we had quick snacks and waited for my hubby's two sisters. After dining, hubby and one of the sisters made a quick dash to the supermarket to purchase some groceries we would need during our stay in Pinamungajan.

After doing the things needed to be done, we headed to the van terminal that would directly bring us to my father-in-law's place. We had to wait for an hour or two to get the best seats. Also, another two hours for travel time to reach our destination.

Past 9:00 o'clock in the evening, we safely arrived at the place which would be our home for three nights.

after changing diaper,
Miguel went straight to the Christmas tree

For days, it kept on raining and when it didn't rain, the winds were too strong hindering us to wander around. But there was a time that hubby, Miguel and my father-in-law went out to see the wide expanse of the land. I was told my little boy saw a number and variety of farm animals. While this was happening, I was relaxing in dreamland. :)

kodak moment of grandson & grandfather

I knew that hubby and my son totally had a blast during our stay in the house. Unfortunately, I couldn't say that I shared the same sentiment. It wasn't that I disliked it there. I hated being cooped up in any place the entire day. I felt suffocated. It was a good thing I brought books and some readings to while away time. Just the same, I was glad that we came since it was a also a vacation for me and I missed chatting with the sisters. It would just be prefect if the weather cooperated with us.

I've been to Pinamungajan before and I expected to see the countryside. Too bad that we left the place without visiting any beaches or landmarks.

family photo captured

We were supposed to leave Monday morning for Cebu City but we, the girls, had some pampering around. One of the sister's manicurist (who comes every two weeks) arrived for a scheduled nail pampering for Ayza. All three sisters had their time and I decided to have mine, too. I had all my nails done and had them painted-slash-glazed purple. It was a beauty. :)

Hours later, I packed our stuff while my hubby and little boy mingled with the family. Soon, everyone was hijacking the bathroom to do their own thing as we expected to leave the countryside for the city. The last ride was just an hour before the sunset. We had to rush.

hubby & Miguel bid Lolo Moling goodbye

Before going to the terminal, we dropped by at the hospital where my father-in-law was working to say our farewells. I knew he felt sad because it would be a long time again before he saw again his only son and grandson.

Two hours later, we reached Cebu City and rode a cab to my sister-in-law's apartment located at
Lahug. We tossed our luggage inside and hopped to a cab again for SM Cebu. We had a sumptuous and very filling dinner at Chika-an sa Cebu Restaurant located at the North Wing of the mall.

SM Cebu had definitely undergone a very big change. It didn't look like I was in any SM malls. Inside the mall, it felt colossal. I would like to take shots of its grandness but I felt too drained to even lift a finger.

Anyway, the sisters ordered a lot of 'sinful' dishes. Hehehe. We had
Crispy Pata, tasty Baked Scallops, crunchy Lechon Kawali and others that I couldn't recall anymore. We had Sinigang as well. I had been salivating over Grilled Squid that time but it was not available. For 'appetizers,' I requested Green Mango with Bagoong. Yum! It was the super-sour taste of green mango that I enjoyed eating it alone with so much gusto! Oh, please forget about bagoong. The green fruit was good enough for me. ;)

uberly perfect for my taste!

Overall, I would say that dining at Chika-an sa Cebu was a 4-stars experience!

The mall was already closing when we finished dining.

We all decided to call it a night since everyone was already exhausted.

My Shopaholic Confession

by , in
Hi! My name is Fran and I'm a shopaholic!

I'm not really a fashionista because I wasn't born with that fair skin and flawless beauty. I didn't attempt to try anything like that on myself because I was shy and I knew that there were certain things that were not meant to be suitable or becoming to anybody. It may look good on others but not on you (that, is, if you get my drift).

Unlike other who splurge on dresses and shoes, mine are more on bags and accessories.

I'm not the typical girl who would go for signature brands like Burberry, Prada and the likes. I'm after the functionality, appearance, color and if my eyes smile like hearts! Hehehe.

I can't take photos of my bag collection because I placed them in boxes to make space for new ones.

Another accessories I spend money on are these little things. Here's just a few of them.

I used to work before; earning my own keep. I tried not to spend too much but I couldn't help nor control myself. Working in the country's business and financial district didn't help for shopping malls and even tiangges were abound everywhere I look or walk. Having 3 credit cards that time was a major frustration, too, after the bills started to pile up come pay day.

Indulging one's self is sometimes a regrettable action. It can't be undone once your cash or plastic card changes hands.

What's a shopaholic again? It's a person who shops compulsively or very frequently. Given that, I believe that being one doesn't have to be taken in a negative way. One can shop and shop but still be wise about it. :)

LP 01: Puso

by , in
Mahal Kong Sarili,

Dear Me,

It had been a while since I've taken a photo and I thought that it would be a pleasant experience to participate in Litratong Pinoy. I had been wanting to join this weekly game.

At dahil sa ang tema ngayong linggo ay PUSO, hinagilap ko ang aming bahay para sa mga bagay na tungkol o hugis PUSO. Ang mga larawang nasa ibaba ay kakakuha ko kani-kanina lang.

And since the theme for this month is the HEART, I searched around the house for things that had something to do or shaped like HEARTS. The photos below were just taken a while back.

This is one of my more than a year old son Miguel's educational toy. His father was feeding him when I got it to take a photo. Miguel was probably wondering why I took his toy. He followed me so he could get it. It was good that I was able to photograph it.

The photos are (1) a cardboard that slightly envelops a box of brownies and (2) a magnet that we got during Janelle's (Jovee's daughter) first year birthday, which we attended last year.

de-hugis na laruan

Isa pang laruan ni Miguel. Kaya siguro siya umiyak kasi akala niya inagawan ko siya ng laruan. Hahaha. :)

This is another toy of Miguel. My son probably cried because he thought that I was taking away his toy. Hahaha. :)

Love Story by Erich Segal

Isa itong aklat na babasahin namin sa FFP. :)

This is a book requirement for FFP. :)

Ito ang aking unang pagsali at sana ay magtuloy-tuloy ito. :)

This is my first participation and I hope I'll get on with it weekly. :)

I've been quite neglectful of visiting blogs in my roll call and acknowledging their presence here.

To
Carol of Insights from the Grocery, thank you for sharing this with me.

1. You need to list 5 Addictions that you have.

2. You have to pass this Tag to five (5) or more people with fabulous blogs.

I think most of my addictions are commonly known already:
  1. BOOKS

  2. VIOLET THINGS

  3. BAGS

Household: Vinegar Usage

by , in
Dear Me,

I've been reading a lot of magazines lately and usually, I see household tips concerning vinegar use.

  1. Ants hate vinegar; so spray it around doorways and other areas they frequent to repel them.

  2. Vinegar also is very good to clean off chewing gum stains from clothes; usually normal cleaning products are not capable of cleaning off chewing gum, so rubbing with vinegar before the machine wash should do the trick.

  3. Pour boiling white vinegar down a clogged drain to remove the obstruction.

  4. A few tablespoons of white vinegar mixed with a few teaspoons of common table salt makes an excellent cleanser for cleaning badly-stained stainless steel cookware. This vinegar and salt mixture also can remove oxidation from copper-clad cookware and make it shine with practically no rubbing required.

  5. Vinegar can also be used as a glass cleaner either mixed with water or used neat in a spray bottle. Use full strength vinegar to polish chrome and stainless steel.

  6. Vinegar is effective in removing rust from metals and for cleaning ice-skate blades.

  7. Vinegar can be used as a fabric softener by adding half the amount of vinegar as you would of your usual softening agent.

  8. For pet owners, white vinegar poured onto pet urine mishaps on carpets, then blotted up with paper towel will prevent staining and odor.

  9. Old, stiff paintbrushes can be revived by dipping them into heated white vinegar for a couple of hours, followed by a rinse in soapy water. Beats using turpentine!

  10. Place a small container of vinegar in your toilet and bathroom to eliminate odors. A half cup of vinegar added to a toilet bowl left overnight removes bowl odor. The smell of the vinegar will also dissipate overnight.

I think I'm going to experiment on the following:

#1 - Our living room has ants of all kinds. I want to get rid of them for the sake of my little boy.

#3 - I'm thinking of using this in the kitchen sink for maintenance purposes.

#9 - This will be a nice suggestion to my father who's doing a lot of painting in the house lately. :)

#10. I will try this, too, instead of using Toilet Duck or Domex.

Aside from culinary and medicinal benefits, vinegar seems to provide cheaper and environment-friendly alternative usage.

I wonder if there are also other household tips using vinegar.

Congrats --- You've Won A Signed C.J. Box Book

by , in
Dear Me,

I just received the subject above in my inbox today. I thought it was a spam mail since that particular email account continuously receives a hundred plus spams everyday.

I was on the verge of dismissing it and marked it spam when a certain word caught my attention.

BOOK.

I read through the entire message and while at it, I was still half-convinced that it was a spam.

Well, it wasn't. The publishing company was a name familiar to me.
I really won a book!

So how did I win? My email address was chosen among over 4,200 entries to win a signed copy of either BLUE HEAVEN or THREE WEEKS TO SAY GOODBYE by the author, C.J. Box!

The signed books will be sent to me in the next few weeks from
Minotaur Books / St. Martins Press in New York City.

I couldn't recall a contest they sponsored but I did register for their newsletter updates.

About the author as lifted from his homepage:

C. J. Box is the author of eleven novels including the award-winning Joe Pickett series. He's the winner of the Anthony Award, Prix Calibre 38 (France), the Macavity Award, the Gumshoe Award, the Barry Award, and an Edgar Award and L.A. Times Book Prize finalist. Box was named 2007 Writer of the Year by the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. His short stories have been featured in America's Best Mystery Stories 2006 and limited-edition printings. The novels have been bestsellers and have been translated into 21 languages.

About Blue Heaven:

Siblings Annie and William Taylor, ages 12 and 10, witness a gruesome murder in the woods outside the small Idaho town of Kootenai Bay, nicknamed Blue Heaven for its abundance of retired LAPD officers. Annie and William make a run for it after they're spotted by the killers, a group of crooked LAPD cops who retired to Idaho eight years earlier after pulling a complicated heist in California that left a man dead. Rancher Jess Rawlins becomes the children's only hope of survival after they take refuge in his barn. Jess must stay one step ahead of the killers, who have volunteered to help the local authorities investigate the children's disappearance.

About Three Weeks To Say Goodbye:
Jack and Melissa McGuane have spent years trying to have a baby. Finally their dream has come true with the adoption of their daughter, Angelina. But nine months after bringing her home, they receive a devastating phone call from the adoption agency: Angelina's birth father, a teenager, never signed away his parental rights, and he wants her back. Worse, his father, a powerful Denver judge, wants him to own up to this responsibility and will use every advantage his position of power affords him to make sure it happens. When Jack and Melissa attempt to handle the situation rationally by meeting face-to-face with the father and son, it is immediately apparent that there's something sinister about both of them and that love for Angelina is not the motivation for their actions.

Based on the plots, I think I'm going to like both books. The action and suspense will definitely hinder me from taking a sandwich bite even for a second. :)

Thanks!

Stephen King Vs. Stephanie Meyer

by , in
Dear Me,

I just read that horror fiction author Stephen King reprehend Twilight star author Stephanie Meyer for her writing ability. According to
Stephen King, Stephanie Meyer "can't write worth a darn."

Although I've been attempting since last year to read the Twilight series, I've been wondering if she was really that good since her books have been riding the bestsellers hitlist for quite a time now.

Stephen King also pointed out that while J.K. Rowling of the Harry Potter series fame was a "terrific writer," Stephanie Meyer, on the other hand, "can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."

He also said that there were terrible writers and yet they were successful.

Why is that? Actually, the credit goes to these terrible writers' works: their stories, its pace and the thrill and excitement their tales evoke to readers.

I think Stephen King is just allowed to criticize his fellow writers but he probably should have gone soft with his comments to Meyer. For aspiring writers, his criticism may strike hard in the heart.

On the other hand, Meyer can take it positively. I think it's constructive criticism at best. For an author like King, newbie Meyer can look up to him and the other writers before her.
